Why Rent a Car in Oman?
Oman is the Arabian Peninsula's great road-trip country — and a rental car is the single best investment you can make in your time here.
Oman is built for self-drive travel. The Sultanate's greatest treasures — the canyon rim of Jebel Shams, the emerald pools of Wadi Shab, the dunes of the Wahiba Sands, the forts of Nizwa and the monsoon mountains of Salalah — are scattered across a country nearly the size of Italy. Public transport between them is minimal and organised tours run on rigid schedules. With your own rental car you set the itinerary, chase the best light, linger where you fall in love and skip what does not interest you.
World-class roads, low fuel prices. Oman consistently ranks among the best countries in the world for road quality. Smooth dual carriageways link Muscat to Sur, Nizwa and Sohar, signage is bilingual, and petrol costs a fraction of what European and North American visitors pay at home. Long distances that look daunting on a map melt away on Omani highways in a comfortable, fully insured KishRent vehicle.
The right car for every journey. City errands and business meetings suit an efficient sedan like the BMW 530i. Families gravitate to the space of a Nissan Patrol or Chevrolet Tahoe. Mountain and desert adventures demand a genuine 4x4 such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, while VIP transfers call for the Mercedes S580 or Range Rover Autobiography. KishRent's fleet covers all of it, with transparent Omani Rial pricing at every level.
Freedom for residents, not just tourists. Car rental in Oman is not only a holiday convenience. Residents between vehicle purchases, professionals on project assignments and companies fitting out teams all rely on our flexible monthly and long-term rental plans, which cost far less per day than short-term hire.
Landing at the airport? Even easier. KishRent delivers cars to Muscat International Airport and Salalah Airport around the clock. Send your flight details on WhatsApp and your car — checked, cleaned and full of fuel — is waiting when you clear arrivals. Read more on our Muscat airport car rental page.

Where Will Your Rental Car Take You?
Six unforgettable Omani destinations — every one of them dramatically easier with your own car.
Muscat & Mutrah
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Royal Opera House, Mutrah Souq and Corniche — Oman's elegant capital rewards unhurried exploration by car.
Jebel Akhdar & Jebel Shams
Oman's Grand Canyon and the Green Mountain. Cool air, terraced villages and hairpin mountain roads best tackled in a capable 4x4.
Wadi Shab & Wadi Bani Khalid
Turquoise pools and palm-lined canyons along the Muscat–Sur coast road — an easy, unforgettable day trip with your own car.
Wahiba Sands
Golden dunes, Bedouin camps and desert sunsets. A 4x4 like the Land Cruiser or Patrol turns the desert into your playground.
Salalah & Dhofar
Monsoon-green mountains, blowholes and frankincense country in the far south — served by our dedicated Salalah branch.
Nizwa & the Forts
Nizwa Fort, Bahla and Jabrin — a circuit of UNESCO-grade heritage an easy 90-minute drive from Muscat.
Driving in Oman — What to Know Before You Go
A short practical guide from the KishRent team, drawn from thousands of rentals across the Sultanate.
Licences and rules. Driving is on the right, seat belts are mandatory, and mobile phone use behind the wheel is heavily fined. Speed limits are enforced by radar — typically 120 km/h on highways and 40–80 km/h in towns. GCC licences are accepted directly; most other visitors should carry an international driving permit with their home licence. The legal minimum rental age with KishRent is 21.
Fuel and distances. Petrol stations are plentiful on main routes and fuel is inexpensive by international standards. Distances are honest, though: Muscat to Nizwa is about 90 minutes, Muscat to Sur two hours, and Muscat to Salalah a full ten-hour desert crossing. Plan fuel stops for remote stretches and always carry water.
Mountain and desert driving. The road up Jebel Akhdar has a police checkpoint that only admits 4x4 vehicles, and the graded track to Jebel Shams' rim is far more comfortable with ground clearance. Desert driving in the Wahiba Sands should only be attempted in a proper 4x4 — ideally with local guidance. Our SUV & 4x4 guide explains which vehicle suits which route.
Wadis and weather. Wadi crossings can flood suddenly after rain — never enter running water. In summer, plan mountain and desert excursions for early morning and keep the air-conditioning serviced (every KishRent car is checked before each handover). For a complete route-by-route plan, read the ultimate Oman road trip guide on our blog.

+96871000270Car Rental in Oman — Frequently Asked Questions
Can tourists rent a car in Oman?+
Yes. Tourists can rent a car in Oman with a valid driving licence, a passport, and a minimum age of 21. GCC and Omani licences are accepted directly, and visitors from most other countries should carry an international driving permit alongside their national licence. Booking takes minutes on WhatsApp or through our online fleet.
How much does it cost to rent a car in Oman?+
Economy cars start from affordable daily rates, mid-size SUVs sit in the middle of the range, and luxury vehicles such as the Lexus LX600 or Mercedes S580 command premium pricing. Weekly rentals typically save 10–20% versus daily rates and monthly rentals save even more. All KishRent prices are quoted in Omani Rial with no hidden fees.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Oman?+
You need a valid driving licence, a passport or national ID, and to be at least 21 years old. Non-GCC visitors are advised to carry an international driving permit. No lengthy paperwork is required — most bookings are confirmed the same day.
Can I pick up my rental car at Muscat International Airport?+
Yes. KishRent delivers cars directly to Muscat International Airport (MCT) arrivals. Share your flight number when booking and your vehicle will be ready when you land, day or night — no counters and no queues.
Is it easy to drive in Oman?+
Oman is widely considered one of the easiest countries in the Middle East to drive in. Roads are modern and well signposted in Arabic and English, fuel is inexpensive, and traffic outside Muscat rush hour is light. Driving is on the right-hand side.
Do I need a 4x4 to explore Oman?+
For cities and highways a sedan is perfectly fine, but a 4x4 such as the Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol is strongly recommended for Jebel Shams, Jebel Akhdar, the Wahiba Sands and wadi tracks. Checkpoints on some mountain roads only admit 4x4 vehicles.
Can I rent a car in Muscat and drive to Salalah?+
Yes. All KishRent vehicles are licensed for self-drive across the entire Sultanate with no cross-region charges. The Muscat–Salalah drive is around 1,000 km; many customers also fly and collect a second car from our Salalah branch.
Does KishRent offer long-term and monthly car rental in Oman?+
Yes. Weekly and monthly rates are significantly discounted versus daily pricing, and long-term contracts for residents, companies and remote workers are one of our specialities. See our monthly car rental page for details.
Is insurance included in the rental price?+
Yes. Every KishRent rental includes comprehensive insurance and collision cover as standard. There are no compulsory add-ons at handover — the price you book is the price you pay.
Can I take the rental car outside Oman, for example to the UAE?+
Cross-border travel requires prior written approval and additional insurance arrangements. Contact us on WhatsApp before booking if you plan to drive to the UAE or elsewhere in the GCC and we will advise on the current requirements.
