Why Salalah is so popular during Khareef. Every year from roughly late June to early September, the Indian Ocean monsoon — known locally as the Khareef — sweeps gentle rain and cool mist across Dhofar. Almost overnight, the usually arid mountains turn a brilliant emerald green, waterfalls come alive and temperatures drop to a comfortable 20–25°C while the rest of the Gulf bakes in summer heat. Driving the mountain roads. The roads that climb into the Dhofar mountains are where Khareef is at its most beautiful — clouds drift across the tarmac, sheer green slopes fall away on either side, and camels graze in the mist. These same conditions also mean wet surfaces, low visibility and steep gradients, especially around Jabal Samhan and the route to Tawi Atair.
